Reading and Phonics
At Broadgreen Primary School we believe that reading for pleasure is key to success. All children are encouraged to love reading a wide variety of material: books, magazines, newspapers and to read online. A love of reading is shared by all our staff.
Phonics at Broadgreen Primary School
At Broadgreen Primary School, we use Read Write Inc as our phonics programme.
What is Read Write Inc?
Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However, at Broadgreen we begin the programme in Nursery and will continue teaching RWI to children beyond the age of 7 if they still need support in their reading.
RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at https://ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/parents/.
How will RWI be taught?
All children are assessed every 6-8 weeks and placed in groups to target their phonic at the appropriate level. This allows complete participation in lessons.
Please click here for further information about how we teach phonics.
To help at home:
Your child will start to bring books home when they are confident readers. Please help them to read and give lots of praise!
If you have any other questions about RWI, please see your class teacher.
This link gives you an overview of how RWI phonics is organised.

Phonics Screening Check Year One
What is the Year 1 phonics screening check?
The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard.
It will identify the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that schools can track pupils until they are able to decode.
Reading at Broadgreen Primary School
Learning to read is complex yet essential for all our children’s life chances. Reading requires the integration of several strategies:
Structure – how sentences are formed, grammar & syntax;
Meaning – it relies on us having an understanding of the world around us to make meaning (semantic cues);
Pictorial – we need to know about illustrations, graphs, pictures, captions and headings (bibliographic cues) and
Graphophonic cues – those supplied by spelling and presentation of words, which interact with knowledge of words and phonic analysis.
At Broadgreen Primary School reading is taught daily. Children are taught to read in guided reading sessions with teachers and support staff. Children are taught in groups or individually and have access to reading interventions where needed.
Children read in as many situations as possible, not just in reading lessons. Reading takes place in all lessons, using books and electronic devices.
Reading Schemes
We use a variety of reading scheme texts and non – scheme books to ensure children learn and apply a range of reading strategies. We endeavour to purchase/provide books/texts that engage boys and girls and their interests.
EYFS/KS1 Early Readers
Phonetically decodable books are carefully matched to a child’s phonic knowledge so they only include sounds and “tricky words” that they have learnt so far. This means that they can use their phonics knowledge and skills to be successful and read independently. If they encounter a word they find hard, they can sound it out and then blend the sounds. There is no guess work! Research has shown that this method creates more rapid progress and
more engaged readers.
At Key Stage 2 books are organised into year groups with an appropriate range of challenge and content.Throughout the school, some books are chosen to correspond to cross curricular learning at an appropriate level.
Parents are encouraged to hear their child read every day, or as often as possible.
Many of our books are available for children and families to read online.
