At Broadgreen Primary we believe that sport and physical education contributes significantly to pupils’ health and well-being. We are committed to ensuring that, by the time our pupils leave primary school, they are physically literate and equipped with the knowledge and competence to lead healthy, active lives.
What does PE look like at Broadgreen?
PE is delivered a minimum of twice a week for all year groups. Sessions are delivered by teaching staff or Everton in the Community. By investing in specialist external agencies, we can provide our staff with CPD opportunities whilst ensuring our children experience high-quality PE lessons.
Our curriculum is game-based with a focus on skill progression. Using the three pillars of progression, we have planned small-step objectives which build year on year, extending pupils’ motor competence, knowledge of rules, strategies and tactics and understanding of healthy participation. By doing this, pupils are able to make connections from previous years whilst learning transferrable skills across the curriculum.
What are the Key Areas in PE?
EYFS- PE lessons in Early Years and Foundation Stage are planned in accordance with the ‘Development Matters 2021’ framework.
KS1- PE lessons heavily focus on developing and securing pupils’ fundamental movement skills whilst providing opportunities for pupils to participate in team games and perform dances.
KS2- PE lessons include application of fundamental movement skills to play competitive games and to further develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance through athletics and dance opportunities. Our curriculum also includes orienteering, focusing on tasks that require pupils to problem solve and work as part of a team.
Swimming
Pupils in Year 3, 4 and 5 take turns to participate in weekly swimming sessions at Wavertree Aquatics Centre where they learn to swim confidently and competently whilst learning to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. Data from Year 5 is then used to judge who will attend Year 6 top up swimming.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities.
Everton in the Community run weekly afterschool clubs every Tuesday and Thursday where pupils have the opportunity to engage in a range of sports that foster their interest.
