Here at Broadgreen Primary School, Geography is taught across the curriculum starting with our youngest children in Nursery and progressing all the way to our Year 6 pupils. Geography is not a stand-alone subject and we endeavour to teach the skills and knowledge contained within the requirements of the National Curriculum (Geography) as part of our ‘Inquiry’ based approach to learning. This means that pupils engage in meaningful learning utilising geographical knowledge and skills within other subject areas too. Broadgreen pupils apply their learning and skillsets to a wider variety of issues that challenge the world they live in. This includes pollution, business and its effect upon the environment as well as population migration in our changing and challenging world. Just as importantly, we utilise the rich cultural fabric of our city and the wider county of Merseyside to gain meaningful learning opportunities and experiences for all classes.
EYFS
In EYFS, pupils begin to study their environment including the nearby world they live in comprising of family and familiar places. They look at their natural world and start to observe patterns, differences and changes.
KS1
In Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), pupils develop their geographical skills and knowledge even further. This includes learning about the continents and oceans and looking at weather patterns. Compass points and map reading begins and pupils look at natural physical features of their world. The use of maps and globes is encouraged and human- made features are also explored. Learning about the United Kingdom and British Isles is a focus.
KS2
In Year 3 and 4, pupils undertake a study of the rivers in the UK and Europe with a focus on Liverpool, the Mersey and its economic and trade impact on the world. A study of mountainous regions also takes place. Geographical skills are further developed and the Inquiry based approach see pupils set about solving problems including pollution as well as further developing map reading skills and beginning to study areas outside of Europe. By upper key stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) these skills and knowledge are further enhanced with a study of the Americas and more detailed trade, settlement and land use programmes.
